All the years I've been a loyal reader of the Garfield comics, I never had the impression it's merely meant for kids. On the contrary, most of the dry humor and charismatic Garfield poses are difficult to 'get' for young children. And yet, the film completely aims for a youthful audience. I have no problem with a movie being pro-children, but this is exaggerated and hardly accessible for adult viewers. The movie totally lacks all the elements that make the comics so entertaining. Garfield's clever and sarcastic remarks, Jon's clumsy womanizing techniques… All this has been replaced with an unhealthy dose of feel-good messages and lame jokes. The computer engineered Garfield doesn't appeal and the other, real pets are badly chosen. The plot is standard-sentiment, with Garfield saving his new housemate puppy from a sneaky, fame-chasing TV host. Breckin Meyer (as Jon Arbuckle) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (as the yummy vet Liz) walk around without anything to do and Bill Murray voices Garfield like it's some sort of dire job he wants to get rid of asap. The first (long-awaited?) cinema adventure of everybody's favorite cat appears to be a quickly produced and unprofessional flick soon to be forgotten. Too bad, since you're left behind with the feeling they could have done something better with this.

Garfield is the main character. He is a lazy, selfish, overweight, orange tabby cat who enjoys eating and sleeping.
He hates Mondays due to his consistent streak of bad luck on them. He also hates spiders, although sometimes he communicates with them. In his cartoon appearances, Garfield usually causes mischief in every episode. In June 1983, comic strips introduced Garfield's alter-ego, Amoeba Man, yet he was only shown in 6 strips (6-20 through 6-25). Amoeba Man is only one of his few imaginary alter egos. The Caped Avenger is one of the more common ones.
It was revealed on July 1, 1983 that he doesn’t like raisins. This has also been implied in a comic strip where Garfield saves time by making a list of things he doesn't want for his birthday instead of things he does want. The only thing on the list was raisins. His birthday is June 19, 1978.

In the land of Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Scotland Yard and fish and chips, Garfield's British invasion takes on a Prince and the Paw-per dimension, as he inadvertently switches places with Prince, a royal cat (and by luck, his look-exactly-alike), who has just inherited Castle Carlyle from his deceased owner, Lady Eleanor. This, however, is a humungous disappointment to her dastardly nephew, Lord Dargis (Billy Connolly).
Now living large as the Cat of Carlyle, Garfield has a butler, Smithee (Ian Abercrombie) and an international array of servants and subjects: Winston, an English Bulldog; MucBunny, a Scottish hare, Nigel, a Punjab ferret; Boero, a Spanish bull; I Claudius, a Shakespearean mouse; and Christopher, a French goose; just to name a few.
Meanwhile Prince is living the simple life of a commoner, hitting the pubs with Jon and Odie, and getting his first taste of the mundane lasagne, and liking all of it.
Uneasy is the head, however, that wears the crown. Lord Dargis, who is next in line to inherit the estate, wants Prince/Garfield out of the picture. Garfield's bigger, better, more purr-fect world is soon turned upside down in this tale of two kitties.

"Garfield: The Movie" captures the elusive charm of the most egotistical character on the funny pages, and drops him into a story that allows him to bask in his character flaws. That Garfield is revealed to be brave and conscientious after all will not surprise anyone, although it might embarrass him.
The movie, based on the comic strip by Jim Davis, has been directed by Peter Hewitt and written by Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow. The filmmakers obviously understand and love Garfield, and their movie lacks that sense of smarmy slumming you sometimes get when Hollywood brings comic strips to the screen. Although Garfield claims "I don't do chases," the movie does have a big chase scene and other standard plot ingredients, but it understands that Garfield's personality, his behavior, his glorious self-absorption, are what we're really interested in. The Davis strip is not about a story but about an attitude.
In a film mostly involved with plot, there are two scenes that are irrelevant but charming. In one of them, Garfield and Odie perform in sort of a music video, and in the other, at the end, Garfield has a solo, singing "I Feel Good" and dancing along. Oh, and Jon and Dr. Liz fall in love, although Garfield is no doubt confident he will remain the center of their attention.
Garfield talks all through the movie (this is one of Murray's most talkative roles), but only we can hear him; that's the equivalent of his thought bubbles in the strip. Garfield is animated, the other animals and the humans are real, and the movie does a convincing job of combining the two levels. Garfield looks like neither a cartoon nor a real cat, but like something in between -- plump, squinty and satisfied. Uncanny how when he talks, his mouth looks like Murray's.
There's a parallel plot involving the talentless Happy Chapman (Stephen Tobolowsky), who hosts a TV show with a pet cat. He thinks maybe using a dog might bring him national exposure, tells the little old lady he is Odie's owner, and as a training strategy, gives him electrical shocks from a cruel collar. Whether Garfield is able to break into and out of the pound, save Odie, expose Chapman and reunite Jon with both the dog and Garfield's own noble presence, I will leave for you to discover.
