My Fair Lady is such a thoroughly delightful and enjoyable movie that one is hard-pressed to pick just one favorite part. But if I had to, I would probably pick the part in which Professor Higgins soliloquizes about the joys of bachelorhood.
“Well after all” says the Professor to Colonel Pickering, “I'm an ordinary man,
Who desires nothing more than an ordinary chance,
to live exactly as he likes, and do precisely what he wants...”
A confirmed bachelor that he is, Higgins bemoans the loss of freedom that would befall a man should a woman enter his life.
He says,
Let a woman in your life and your serenity is through,
A pensive man am I, of philosophical joys,
who likes to meditate, contemplate,
far for humanities mad inhuman noise,
Quiet living man....
But, let a woman in your life, and your sabbatical is through,
she'll have a booming boisterous family,
who will descend on you en mass,
she'll have a large wagnarian mother,
with a voice that shatters glass,…
He concludes that he would therefore
“never let a woman in my life.”
And of course, life can be full of irony,
