This is the first time i read the English novel . As far as i am concerned, it is obviously a hard task for beginners such as me. After enduring the pains of reading difficult materials , I finish the whole book and I get great joys from the bottom of my heart.
Now lets talk about the main idea of the novel. A young man came to rent a room in a house. The house keeper told him how good the furnished room was and who had lived here before. The young asked whether his lover Eloise Vashner had rent the room before and the house keeper denied. Then the young man went into the room disappointedly. The room had many little signs left by the furnished room’s procession of guests. The man laid on the bed and suddenly he felt something that suggested his lover had been here before. He searched the room in detail but he couldn’t find anything that his lover left in the room . He hurriedly went downstairs and asked the house keeper again about the previous guests but he got the same answer. He stepped back the room and then sealed the whole room with the strips. Finally he turned on the gas and laid himself gratefully on the bed . He died. After that through the talk between the housekeeper and another person , we know that Eloise Vashner did die in that room. What a tragedy .
The grateful sentences impress me deeply. For example, restless, shifting, fugacious as time itself is a certain vast bulk of the population of the red brick district of the lower West Side. Homeless, they have a hundred homes. They flit from furnished room to furnished room, transients forever--transients in abode, transients in heart and mind. They sing "Home, Sweet Home" in ragtime; they carry their ~lares et penates~ in a bandbox; their vine is entwined about a picture hat; a rubber plant is their fig tree.
The author O Henry is famous for his special writing style among the world. This short story follows O Henry’s style. Before finished the whole book, I was shocked by the young man’s suicide. It is irrational because in my opinion, the man killed himself without reasonable reasons because he hadn’t made clear whether his lover lived here before . He could spend another five months finding his lover since he had already been looking for her for five months. But when i read the end of the passage, I understood the the author tell the story in such a way that the story is more moving and lead us to think more about the tragic end of the young man and his lover.
After finishing the book, I want to show my great admiration to the writer and his novel.
summary of The Furnished Room
The story ends with two old Dickensian landladies prattling over their beer about the death of a young woman in the room the previous week, which the landlady has kept secret because she did not want to lose the young man's rent. As the young man lies dead upstairs, the ending of the story, with its focus on the mendacity of the old women, reinforces the squalor of the room, further suggesting the unfeeling city that has no room for the romanticism of the two lovers.
