Patna, however, manages to stay afloat. The foundering vessel is towed into
port--and since the officers have strategically vanished, Jim is left to stand
trial for abandoning the ship and its 800 passengers.

The outline of the book:The book tells such a story: Lord Jim ,a son from a parsonage, is a mate of Paterna. He went to the court alone and his sailing qualifications was cancelled due to abandoning the ship and overlooking his duty when a shipwreck happened. After that, in the help of Marlow captain, Jim change a lot of work. He finally settled in Patusan, an indigenous settlement whose civilization is isolated, under Marlow captain and his mate Stan's arrangement. In Patusan, Jim win the master's trust. Once, he interceded with a gang of white pirates for the master, and allowed. However, those pirates were treacherous and kill the master's son when they left. Jim was filled with grief and indignation, and he want to ask for the master's forgiveness via killing himself. The singular structure is a important feature of Lord Jim. The story is very interesting and his climaxs is not complicated. However, Conrad did not write the story from Jim's birth to his death to follow the prescribed order. To instead of the prescribed order, Conrad divided the forty-five chapter novel into three parts, and respectively adopt different narrative method to narrate each part. The first part, which stop at the forth chapter, was written with the third person narration. From the fifth chapter to the thirty-sixth chapter, that is the second part. In this part, Conrad drew Marlow captain as the narrator to tell some people the story of Jim after meal. And he storrest chapters is the final part of the story, which is followed by Marlow address to a "privileged". The fancy structure made me confused the first time I read it, and I make its climax clear after I read the second time. However, on other than Conrad's singular structure makes the story whose climax is very simple afford for thought. When analysis this book ,we can not overlook Jim's heroism, which makes Jim be a inconsistent person and causes Jim's tragedy. "after a course of light holiday literature his vocation for the sea had declared itself" "fhe could see the dig ships departing, the broad-beamed ferries constantly on the move,the little boats floaing far below his feet, with the hazy splendour of the sea in the distance, and the hope of a stirring life in the world of adventure. "From those words from the marine novel, we can easy know Jim's strong heroism. Thought Jim bear heroism in heart, he can not carry it out bravely. That makes him a inconsistent person. When shipwreck happened and needed him to show heroism, he was defeated by his instinctive fear and abandon the ship . However ,on taking on the accident boat, he want to swim back the sinking ship to have a look. What's more, his heroism make contributes to his tragedy. When he was rescued, his heroism prompt him to chose to be honesty, and not like the captain lied about that. All in all, Jim was too romantic with the fictional world of sailing hero. From where I stand, though the book tells Jim's story, I think his aim is to reveal the false of western imperialism. As to this issue, we can analysis the false imperialism via contrast. The captain of Paterna is arrogant and noble, and proud of coming from "these abode of piety and peace ".however, when the shipwreck happened, he flee from a calamity without a flash of hesitation. Contrast to the captain, the two native niggers try their best to carry out their duty as a humble sailor. And though Jim also abandon the ship, he regret immediately when take on the accident boat, and he is honest to receive the court's adjudgement in stead of telling lies. In addition, contrast to the gang of white pirates' treachery, the master of Patusan shows his mercy to the white pirates after Jim's beg. That is a epitome of the relationship between the colonist and aboriginals. The colonist cheat adoriginals' mercy and then kill them cruelly. And Jim's self-abuse and suicide also reflect the imperialism's false. Despite I’ve not in my childhood yet, I still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. The tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. This summer I’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. It’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the French author, Antoine de St-Exupery, The Little Prince. As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince is not very complex. “I”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612. The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids. On his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. Following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the Sahara, on the earth. Unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot. I seldom think about the true meaning of love and life before. Well, now I can say, with my short sixteen-year’s life experience, it’s like the stars in the sky that lit my heart. The little prince is not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. Nevertheless, when I read this book, I feel a little sad – about ourselves, whom are losing more and more innocence

“‘他滚到船边,滚得很轻柔,这是我记得我在船上看到的最后一眼,’他继续说,‘我不在乎他干了什么。他看上去好像要爬起来: 我想他是要爬起来,当然啦: 我预料他会从我身边冲过栏杆,跟着其他人跳进小船里。我可以听见他们在乱冲乱撞,就在下面,一个声音好像飞箭一样大喊着“乔治”。接着是三个声音一起喊。传到我这儿却各不相同: 一个声音咩咩地叫,另一个是尖叫,还有一个是咆哮。噢!’
“他打了个颤,我看着他站起来,仿佛一只手稳稳地从上边揪着他的头发,把他拉出了座椅。他慢慢地往上站起——站直了,当他的膝头挺住不动,那手也放开了他时,他又站着晃了起来。在他说‘他们叫起来了’的时候,他的脸,他的动作,乃至他的声音,都带有一种可怕的宁静——我不由自主地侧耳倾听那喊声的余音,通过寂静造成的虚假效果,可以直接听到那种声音。‘船上有八百人哪,’他说,那可怕的茫然凝视使我靠在椅背上动弹不得。‘八百个活人哪,而他们却喊叫着让一个死人跳下去逃命。“跳,乔治!跳啊!噢,跳啊!”我站在一旁,手放在吊艇架上。我很安静。天已是漆黑一团。你既看不见天也看不见海。我听到旁边的救生船一再发出砰砰的撞击声,此外下面有一阵子再没别的声音,但是我下面的大船上却充满了人们的谈话声。突然间船长吼道,“我的天哪!飑云!飑云!推开!”随着第一声咝咝的雨声,随着第一阵狂风吹来,他们尖叫着,“跳,乔治!我们会接住你!跳啊!”大船慢慢地往下栽;雨就像海崩一样浇在船身上;我头上的帽子也吹飞了;我的呼吸也给憋回到嗓子眼里去了。我恍若在一个塔尖上,听到又一声疯狂的尖叫,“乔——嗷——治!噢,跳呀!”大船在我脚下沉下去,沉下去,先是船头……’
“他沉思着将手举到脸部,手指做着捡拾的动作,好像有蜘蛛网在纠缠着他,以后他望着伸开的手掌足足有半秒钟,突然说道——
“‘我跳了……’他缩住口,眼神躲闪着。……‘好像是。’他又说。
“他那清澈的蓝眼睛转向我,可怜兮兮地瞪着,看着他站在我面前,哑口无言又很难受的样子,我被一种虽有智慧却无可奈何的悲哀感压抑着,同时杂有老年人在小孩子惹的祸事面前无能为力的那种感到好笑而又深切的怜悯。
“‘看起来是这样了。’我喃喃道。
“‘我完全没有意识到这一点,直到我往上看时才发现。’他急切地解释道。那也是可能的。你得像听遇到麻烦的小男孩一样听他说。他不知道。不知怎的,事情就发生了。这种事绝不会再发生。他跳下去时,身体有一部分压到了别人,而后落在划手的座位上。他觉得他左侧所有的肋骨一定都断了;然后滚翻过来,模模糊糊地看到他刚遗弃的大船耸立在他之上,红色的舷灯在雨中闪着光,显得很大,有如透过一层雾看到的山崖峭壁上的一团火。‘大船似乎比一堵墙还高;像一座悬崖般高耸在小船之上……我当时但愿能死掉,’他哭道,‘没有回头路了。我仿佛跳进了一口井——跳进了一个无底深洞……’”

【赏析】
优秀的文学具有穿透力,它可以给予我们穿越迷茫黑夜、审视世界和人生的犀利眼光,这眼光会让我们受用一生。康拉德的《吉姆爷》带给我们的就是这种体验。
米兰·昆德拉说过:“小说不是作者的忏悔,而是对于陷入尘世陷阱的人生的探索。”康拉德在《吉姆爷》中创造了一个伟大的悲剧境界,塑造了一个不朽的悲剧英雄吉姆。他在追求崇高伟大的人格理想过程中进行了悲剧性搏斗,付出了生命的代价。吉姆是康拉德苦心塑造的一个水手精英,他被剥夺航海权利,这不啻是剥夺了他精神上和物质上的整个王国。一艘在茫茫大海上行进的船,是水手的乌托邦。水手是乌托邦里的主宰、纪律、道德和责任。一次成功的航行,意味着他对乌托邦一次成功的统治。然而,这一切全让那本能的一跳毁了,多年的精英毁于瞬间。这本能的一跳不只破坏了他做水手的信念,更搅乱了他做人的准则。康拉德给他的主人公吉姆打了一个形象生动、富有哲理的比喻:“一只美丽的蝴蝶可以落在一小堆脏土上一动不动,可是一个普通的人决不会呆在他的粪便上一动不动。”吉姆本来是不打算一辈子当一个普通人的,而他现在连普通人也做不成了!选段充分揭示了吉姆在本能的一跳前后的矛盾、痛苦以及对陷进万劫不复境地的无穷悔恨。这个过程是整个故事的焦点,它影响了吉姆的一生。
就小说的叙述角度而言,《吉姆爷》可以分为三大部分: 第一部分自第一章至第四章,采用全知叙述的方式。这个全知的叙述者对吉姆的态度是客观、严厉且不留情面的。在决定吉姆一生的关键时刻,小说展现了吉姆的思想、情感、动机与性格,使读者可以直接看到主人公吉姆的内心深处。吉姆非常天真,他对他的职业的理解实际上不切实际,他无法想象自己与那个肮脏、肥胖的船长有什么相同之处。第二部从第五章到第三十五章,由一个叫马罗的水手用第一人称进行叙述。马罗这个人物是从第四章开始出现的,他出现在法庭审判的观众席中并为吉姆的辩护所吸引,对吉姆的经历非常好奇。于是从第五章开始,读者就跟随着马罗去对吉姆的经历进行一番探究。在这一部分里,读者所看到的是马罗对吉姆以及整个事件的印象和判断,所了解的是马罗与吉姆的关系以及他对吉姆的喜爱,并没有深入到吉姆本人的主观精神世界中去。第三部分从第三十六章到第四十五章,这部分内容以马罗致无名氏的信件和手稿的形式出现。吉姆死后,马罗从吉姆的马来妻子和海盗布朗的口中得知吉姆在帕妥赛岛上的经历,并加以转述。康拉德在《吉姆爷》中采用了三种叙述方法,其最显著的特点是从不同的层面、侧面展示了吉姆这个人物的个性和特点。在前四章中,吉姆是个有污点的人物,是一个不切实际的梦想家和弱者,从第五章到第三十章,马罗口中的吉姆则充满了朝气和魅力。类似的多角度的叙述方法也出现在威廉·福克纳的《喧哗与骚动》中。这样,就如郑克鲁所说:“读者在读作品时再把这众多的途径组装起来,形成一个全景图,这幅图画不是作者强加给读者,而是读者自己经过一定的艺术再创造后获得的,已掺进读者自己的成分,自然也更为读者本人所珍惜。”
从整体结构而言,《吉姆爷》是康拉德最大胆、最复杂,同时也是最自信、最成熟的小说。小说的结构完全打乱了原来的时间顺序,从吉姆经历的中段(即在东方港口担任职员时)开始,叙述他如何成功地向各靠岸船只招徕生意,但奇怪的是他从不愿意透露自己的姓氏,仿佛在隐瞒一个重要的事实。这样的开头给读者留下一个悬念,使读者非常好奇,于是小说就以探索事实的方式展开,将片段的材料串联起来,使一些零碎的而又孤立的印象构成一幅图画。显而易见,时间的顺序完全被打乱了。发生得最晚的事放在最先的位置,即在第一章中进行了叙述,而发生得较早的事,被放到后面才得到交代。康拉德采用了这样前后穿插的叙述方式,并没有按传统的时间顺序交代故事的来龙去脉,目的在于全方位地剖析吉姆的性格特征,以及影响其性格的各种动机、情绪与信念。康拉德认为,在展示人物时,不应该按时间顺序从生到死平铺直叙,而是应该首先从这个人物在某一时刻的经历所给人留下的强烈印象开始,然后,在忽前忽后、交叉穿插的过程中使人物的形象渐趋完善。可以说,时间意识是小说家比较自觉的一种意识。
另外,康拉德印象主义的创作方法在《吉姆爷》中得到了充分的体现。印象主义特别注重色彩与明暗的运用,而康拉德在《吉姆爷》中运用了一系列的光和影、明和暗的对比来表达其所包含的象征意义。正如前文所述,康拉德通常运用白色象征纯洁和善良,用黑色象征死亡和阴谋。在选段中,作者这样描述行将遇险的帕特纳号船:“在广阔无垠的水色天光里沿着指定的航线行驶,黑沉沉地吐着火光”,而它的舵轮上则握着一双黑色的手。在吉姆最后一次道别时,“一只孤独的黑鸟在空中盘旋”,“一只小小的黑色独木船驶入河心,连船中载着的两个小小的人影也是黑色的”,所有这些黑色的意象都是不祥的征兆,暗示着吉姆的死亡。特别是在吉姆临死时,马罗眼中的吉姆“只是一个在一团漆黑的世界捕捉到全部光线的白色斑点”。这样的结局说明黑暗战胜了光明,邪恶战胜了善良。
康拉德的写作还透出深重的粗犷之意,腥风、狂雨、亚非森林中的种种困顿,或者,人所作的与那不可思议的自然力的对抗,这一切都使人联想起“力量”一词。康拉德是力的讴歌者。他在文体上的纵横挥洒的笔触,壮丽辉煌的场景,使人眼花缭乱、目不暇接。但有时未免过头,出现堆砌辞藻的毛病,修辞泛滥成灾。
然而,康拉德对创作技巧的追求和革新并没有妨碍他在小说中进行道德教谕。相反,他的道德发现和他的艺术创新是紧密结合在一起的,是以他的航海生涯和他的生活为基础的。在二十多年的航海生活中,他几乎跑遍了世界各地,积累了大量的原始素材,亲眼目睹、亲身经历过殖民强国在海外的所作所为。与有同样经历的作家吉卜林所不同的是,康拉德在作品中对目睹的殖民者的肮脏和残暴事实如实记载,并加以艺术的概括,他对殖民主义和帝国主义暴行的痛恨是显而易见的,因此他的小说中不可避免地包含有深刻的社会和历史内容。
评论家对《吉姆爷》作过不同的诠释。有的认为,小说是写一个本质上诚实的年青人由于一时的失足,寻求精神解脱和寻求生存的问题;有的认为,小说通过描写人性在危急关头的懦弱与勇敢,寻求精神复活的问题。而康拉德本人则在《吉姆爷》的序中说,“《吉姆爷》想要表达的是一种对失去尊严的痛切感”,“他不是冷漠反常的思考的产物。他也不是北方迷雾中的人物”。的确,对于这样一本印象主义色彩浓厚的小说,完全可以从不同的层次进行诠释。有一千个读者就有一千个吉姆爷。
英国诺丁汉大学著名学者阿诺德·卡特教授在分析康拉德的作品时说,康拉德的作品好比葱头,读者尽管读下去,剥了一层又一层,满怀着希望要剥出康拉德在下一层隐藏了什么,但等到葱头剥到最后时,读者看到的仍是葱头!是非曲直呢?康拉德不管不顾地留给读者了。
