ONCE upon a time there lived a king called Minos. He ruled over the island of Crete. He also had a horrible monster called the Minotaur. The Minotaur lived in a maze (迷宫) under the ground. He had the body of a man but the head of a bull (公牛). Minos was a cruel (残忍的) king, and whenever he was bored he would attack the people of a nearby island called Athens. To stop him, they reached an agreement. They would give seven boys and seven girls each year to the minotaur as a sacrifice (献祭). Minos agreed. The prince of Athens, Theseus, grew angry at this. He told his father to send him to Crete as the seventh boy, for he wanted to kill the Minotaur. When Minosx27 daughter,Adriadne,saw the handsome Theseus arriving to be sacrificed,she wanted to help him.That morning,she secretly went to Theseus and gave him a sword and a ball of string. The monsterx27s home was a black maze - no noe knew how to get out.Minos threw the seven boys and seven girls in and laughed.Theseus though,now had aplan.He left a line of string behing him.After a long battle, he killed the monster. Then,he followed the string and, after many hours,he reached daylight.Adriadne was waiting for him at the entrance,and,before Minos could catch them,they escaped together.
