白宫的命名是因为该建筑是总统府,为了表示总统居住与办公地方的体面,所以一般都是以宫殿的意思来作为命名。且其设计是仿造爱尔兰式宫殿所建造的,与传统的宫殿还是有细微不一样的。
且白宫前身不叫白宫,而是因为其1812年美英战争的时候,英国放火烧了总统府建筑,使建筑的棕红墙面变的漆黑难看,所以1902年的时候罗斯福上任就下令用白油漆刷墙来掩盖这些痕迹。由此才被命名为白宫。
